RedHawks Roll Over Saints, 11-1
The game was in doubt for the first six innings, but the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have the top run scoring offense in the league and proved it in a five run seventh that put the game out of reach. The St. Paul Saints managed just five hits and lost 11-1 on Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field. The loss drops the Saints to 27-13.
The Saints scored the first run of the game getting a solo homer from Jeremy Martinez, his career high sixth of the season and the first time he’s homered in back-to-back games in his career. It also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 33 straight.
Jake Matthys, who was moved up a day in place of the injured Eddie Medina, pitched well, but the RedHawks got to him in the third. Leo Pina ripped a single off the glove of shortstop Joey Wong for a leadoff single. Brian Olson then grounded one just inside the third base line for an RBI double tying the game at one. Yhoxian Medina sacrificed Olson to third and Brennan Metzger’s RBI single to center gave the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth Metzger walked with one out. Tim Colwell drilled an RBI double into the right field corner making it 3-1. Colwell took third on the play. With the infield drawn in Devan Ahart hit a one hopper that Wong picked at short, held the runner and threw out Ahart. The good feeling didn’t last as Chris Jacobs roped an RBI double into right-center making it 4-1.
It stayed that way until the seventh when the RedHawks scored five runs getting a sacrifice fly from Colwell and three straight RBI singles from Jacobs, Correlle Prime and T.J. Bennett. The final run scored on a fielding error by Burt Reynolds in left on Bennett’s single.
The RedHawks added two more in the eighth when Metzger led off with a solo homer to left, his fifth of the season, and a bases loaded walk to Bennett.
The same two teams will meet in the finale of the three game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Ryan Zimmerman (1-1, 4.55) to the mound against RedHawks RHP Michael Tamburino (3-4, 3.50). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
