Tols Tosses Gem, Reeves Walk-Off Double Propel Cougars
GENEVA, Ill. – Half of the Cougars’ walk-off wins this year have come against the Houston Apollos (10-62). Mitch Reeves pulled through with a game-winning double to plate Kacy Clemens and give the Kane County Cougars (35-38) a 3-2 win in front of a season-high 8,415 at Northwestern Medicine Field Saturday night.
The entire game was well pitched as Josh Tols and Houston’s starter Martin Alcoverde kept the game scoreless through the first three innings.
The Cougars’ first hit came with one out in the 4th on Josh Rollette’s solor homer for a 1-0 lead. Gavin LaValley followed with another solo blast as the Cougars homered back-to-back in back-to-back nights.
Tols only coughed up one run in his 7.0 innings of work with two walks and 11 strikeouts. He was in line for the win until Houston tied the game in the 8th on a Yeiler Peguero RBI groundout.
Ryan Richardson (1-1) kept the game tied working out of a bases-loaded situation in the 8th and tossing a perfect 9th. Reeves’ game-winning hit came against Keisy Portorreal (0-3). It was the second walk-off hit of the year for Reeves this year.
The Cougars can sweep Houston Sunday. Jack Fox (2-4, 4.41) takes the mound for the Cougars against Houston’s righty Jake Voss (0-1, 5.68). First pitch at Northwestern Medicine Field is at 1:00 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
