Trevor Simms Signs with Sioux Falls
A tower of power will be on the mound for the Canaries this summer.
The Birds signed 6’4 pitcher Trevor Simms last week to join an already loaded staff looking to fuel another run to the American Association Finals, and manager Mike Meyer expects the 29-year-old righthander to bring serious heat.
So, when you go out to The Birdcage this summer and watch Simms, “You Should be Having Fun,” as American R&B band Tower of Power once sang.
“Trevor is a true power arm with velocity in the mid to upper 90’s with late movement,” Meyer said. “He can pitch in any role and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s in the front of our rotation or closing games out for us in the ninth inning.”
A fire-balling reliever with an absurd 10.8 SO9 (strikeouts per nine innings) who held opposing batters to a .189 average his senior year of college at Tulane, Simms was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 32nd round of the 2016 MLB Draft and reached the Double-A level in 2017.
Meyer first noticed Simms when the Hurst, Texas, native pitched for the Chicago Dogs of the American Association in 2018. Simms struck out 39 batters in 48 innings and posted a 2.98 ERA.
In 2019 for Chicago, Simms registered an 8.9 SO9 — the best of his four-year professional career and a clip that was the MLB average that season.
Like many pro players, he did not pitch in 2020, with limited opportunities due to the cancelation of the affiliated minor league season and the acquisition of droves of affiliated players taking up AAPB and other independent league rosters.
This only means that there is plenty of electricity saved and ready to unleash from the Tower of Power in 2021.
Simms joins a pitching staff that includes potential “Snake Eyes” — a pair of veteran minor league starters Carlos Pimentel and Angel “Ace” Ventura — plus young flame throwers Robbie Gordon, Jackson Maynard, and Kolton Ingram. Returning from the 2020 Birds staff are Kevin Folman, Ty Culbreth, and pitching coach Grady Wood.

The Canaries recently announced their new ownership group, True North Sports, LLC, which plans to beef up the ballpark experience in 2021. The new season opens May 18 at The Birdcage against Winnipeg, the first of 56 games at home through the season finale on Sept. 6. Click here to see the schedule.
