Vancouver Canadians Harris, Perdomo Blank Hillsboro Hops, 3-0
The Vancouver Canadians Jon Harris blanked the Hillsboro Hops Friday night, 3-0. Harris went six innings and 90 pitches, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out four. Harris would not get the win tonight though as Angel Perdomo (1-0) pitched the last four innings of hitless ball, striking out seven, to earn the win.
Angel Perdomo was making his Northwest League debut. Perdomo was called up from the Bluefield Blue Jays. Angel was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011.
Carlos Hernadez and Arial Hernandez were both effective bookends for the Hops tonight. Carlos started and went six innings, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out nine. Like his counterpart, Carlos would not get the win as both pitchers left after six with the score tied 0-0. Arial Hernandez pitched the last inning striking out one and retiring the side in order.
It was the middle relief that had trouble. Kevin Simmons pitched the seventh allowing the winning run on one hit for the loss (1-2). Breckin Williams handled the eighth giving up two runs on three hits for the final score.
The Canadians drew blood first in the seventh. To lead off, Ryan Hissey was hit by a pitch and took first with no outs. Sean Hurley followed with a grounder down the third base line for a single. With Conor Panas at the plate, a passed ball got by catcher Alexis Olmeda and both runners went to scoring position. Gunnar Heidt bunted towards first. First baseman Trevor Mitsui rushed the ball and tagged Heidt. During the play, Hissey came home for the game’s first score.
Vancouver brought two insurance runs in the next inning though they would not need them. Andrew Guillotte grounded to second baseman Ferney Ozuna, who made a valiant effort keeping it from going to the outfield, but the throw to first was not in time. With Ryan Metzler at the plate, Guillotte stole second with no throw. The next pitch was another passed ball by catcher Alexis Olmeda, sending Guillotte to third. Metzler then singled up the middle to score Guillotte.
Ryan Metzler went to second on a ground out by Justin Atkinson to third baseman Josh Anderson. Ryan Hissey singled to left field to score Metzler from second. Final score, Vancouver, 3-0.
The two Ryans, Metzler and Hissey, had identical lines for the Canadians. Both went 1 for 3, scored a run and had an RBI. Sean Hurley went 2 for 4. Andrew Guillotte scored a run and Gunnar Heidt had the other RBI.
Joey Armstrong was impressive in his Hops debut tonight. Armstrong went 2 for 3. Joey is the 2015 10th round pick for the Diamondbacks. Armstrong played college ball at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV). Joey was just called up from the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer league. Josh Anderson and Sergio Alcantara had the other two hits for the Hops.
The Hillsboro Hops (10-6) maintained their tie with Salem-Keizer for the South Division lead. The Vancouver Canadians (7-9) remain three games behind North Division leader Everett.
Both teams play Saturday evening for the fourth game of the five game series. The Hops lead it 2-1.
